description

Gyllius was a French traveller from Albi. His travels to the Mediterranean - and Constantinople specifically (where he stayed between 1544-1550) - produced multiple works, among which De Topographia Constantinopoleos ("On the antiquities of Constantinople") is one of the most important. He died in Rome in 1555 of malaria.

(Re)discovered the Basilica cistern.
