The Taksim Waterway was a later Ottoman addition to meet the increasing demands in Pera. Its conduits were founded by sultan Mahmud I's (r. 1730-1754) mother Saliha Sultan. The waterway was gradually extended over time between 1730-1839.
First additions: Mahmud I (r. 1730-1754)
The first measures to increase the water output above the Golden Horn were taken in 1732. Initially, the new water imput came from the Bahçeköy reservoir (800 cubic meters water each day), which ran via the Bahçeköy Aqueduct and the Topuzlu Dam, Valide Dam, and Mahmud II Dam to the water chamer of Taksim (maksem) through a 20 km conduit. The distribution chamber connected the water from Bahçeköy to multiple fountains, sebils.
