According to Theophanes, the Valens aqueduct bridge was repaired by Justin II (r. 565-578) in 576 after a period of neglect due to his predecessor Justinian I’s (r. 527-565) stinginess. This alleged neglect is also attested in a contemporary 6th century source: Procopius’ Secret History.
